As with any sport, the way high school basketball players condition themselves is important. Team members are required to run up and down the court for almost an hour, which requires a huge amount of energy to be exerted. The team that's more physically fit usually wins the game. That's why coaches put so much focus around making sure their players are in a position to win games, while also having fun. They can only make the sport enjoyable if the act of playing does not wear them down.
Some practices of conditioning require constant drills between players. A competitive, yet fun way to encourage fitness is by nominating players of the losing team to do various activities such as jumping jacks, toe-jumps, push-ups and running laps.
A few other drills that increase the conditioning of high school basketball players include the following:
Fast-Break Lay-Ups - Many coaches will start will these drills at beginning of the season. This action starts from half-court then expand to the full court by the end of the season. How this technique works is that one half of the team starts at the left side of one goal and the other half of the team stands on the other side of the goal. Each side holds a ball and as the coach blows his whistle, the first person on each side dribbles the ball to the opposite side of the court as fast as they can, ending with a lay-up.
Dribble Ladders - This drill starts at either full length or half length of the court. The process starts with a line of players standing on the out of bounds line. When the whistle blows, the players sprint to the first line as they dribble the ball. When they come to the line, they bend down to touch the line and run back as fast as they can to the starting point. The next time, players change the hand they are dribbling with which challenges their coordination. The moral of this drill is control over speed.
Again, with any drill, the winners count as the losers perform jumping jacks, run laps, or do push-ups. To keep high school basketball players in tip-top shape for upcoming games it's always important to perform exercises that challenge coordination, speed and abilities on a daily basis.
